The Founding Class at JPIICHS, the Class of 2013, celebrated the school's first ever graduation and Baccalaureate Mass on Saturday, 18 May 2013! For a class that has participated in all of the important milestones of the school thus far, no event has been as significant or important. Over 450 friends and family joined in honoring and recognizing the achievements of this special class. 23 students earned and received their high
school diplomas that day, but more than that, the Class gave back to the community a full, growing -- 170 students enrolled for 2013-14 -- and vibrant Catholic high school.
The day began with Mass at Holy Trinity Parish, with celebrant
Msgr. Larry Christian, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. Concelebrating the Mass were six additional priests, including:
Father Martin Leopold, Moderator of the Curia;
Msgr. Larry Stuebben; Msgr. Albert Hubertus; Father Tony Pesek; Father Don Cowie; Father Dennis Arechiga; and our own
Deacon Robert Gorman.
We were pleased to welcome Superintendent
Patricia Davis, who presented the Archbishop's Medallion Award. Following Mass were the Commencement Exercises. The school was honored to welcome two mayors from the towns surrounding the school; each presented a special
proclamation.
Mayor Michael Carpenter of Schertz and Mayor Gale Pospisil of New Braunfels recognized the school and the Class of 2013. In each city, 18 May 2013 was officially "John Paul II Catholic High School Day."
During Mass, four seniors -- Mary Glatt, Mary Grace Gagnon, Sarah Clester, and Valerie Wood -- sang the National Anthem. Speakers included
(pictured on this page, above left to below right): Cassidy Zgabay, Class President; Hannah Curry, Valedictorian; and Anastazia Gilman, Salutatorian. Each represented the school and their class well.Finally, the CEO and President of Catholic Life Insurance, Michael Belz, was our guest as the first ever commencement speaker. He challenged the Class of 2013 to go forth and share what they learned from JPIICHS.
